Although the Mexican state is officially secular, Mexico is the second largest Catholic country in the world, after Brazil. The influence of the Catholic religion in the Mexican people is enormous and the proof is the numerous religious temples to be found throughout the country.
The Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City is located in Constitution Square (Zocalo). The construction began in 1571 and it was not completed until 1813. Because of its long construction period, its style is a mixture of gothic, plateresque, baroque, and neoclassical.
