Mexico City is the capital of the United Mexican States.
According to 2007 data, it is estimated that the city has a population of over 8 million inhabitants and the metropolitan area of nearly 20 million inhabitants, which makes Mexico City the ninth most populous metropolis in the world and the second most populous Latin America, exceeded only by São Paulo (Brazil).
Benito Juarez International Airport is the gateway to Mexico City for foreign travellers. Located east of the city, the airport has connection with the city by subway.
In 1987, the Historic Centre of Mexico City and Xochimilco was named UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mexico City is a huge city in which tourists can feel overwhelmed. The historical center, near the Zocalo, can be easily visited on foot. However, huge distances have to be travelled to visit other places, for which the subway system, that is very cheap, helps a lot. The subway in Mexico City is very curious, because it does not run on rails, but the wheels are tires, as we can see in the following video.
From the top of the Latinoamericana Tower how huge is Mexico City can be appreciated, since it is impossible to see where the city finishes on the horizon. At night, the city lights are seen everywhere as far as the eye can see, offering an impressive spectacle, as in the following photograph where the Cathedral and the Zocalo can be seen:
