The heart of the city is the Constitution Square (Plaza de la Constitución), informally known as the Zocalo. It occupies a roughly rectangular area almost 46,800 m² (195 m x 240 m).
In the center of the Zocalo stands a huge mast that holds the flag of Mexico. As one sign on the base of the flagpole says, it is not very convenient to stay close if there is rain and lightning.
