Toluca, formally Toluca de Lerdo, is the state capital of Mexico State and it is located to the west-southwest of Mexico City, less than 100 kilometers.
At the heart of the city of Toluca, south of the Plaza de Los Mártires (Martyrs Square), we can find the Iglesia Catedral de Toluca de San José (Cathedral of Toluca San Jose), built between 1867 and 1918 on the ancient Franciscan monastery of the Assumption. In Toluca, the Cosmo Vitral Botanical Garden can also be visited, a building in Art Nouveau style of wrought iron and glass from the beginning of the 20th century. It was formerly the market town and now it houses a fantastic botanical garden with over 1,000 species worldwide:
In addition, the Cosmo Vitral is decorated with huge windows of different colors that are regarded as being one of the largest stained glass windows in the world:
From Toluca, the Nevado de Toluca volcano can be reached in about one hour.
